The 5th IESSC Symposium was held in Sydney
Australia on Easter Saturday 7th April 2007.
The venue was the Hills Lodge Hotel at Castle Hill
Sydney a modern venue with excellent catering and
grounds suitable for a field demonstration.
The Committee consisting of Marie Merchant
Chairperson, Shannon Lancaster, Secretary, Kate and
Michael Keely, Emma Parker, Vin McPhee, Yvonne Lauder,
Sonia and Trevor Webb, George Render Treasurer and
Chris Baker were pleased to welcome the President of
IESSC, David Swank and partner Scott Lenz to the
Australian ESS Symposium along with some 60 or so
Springer enthusiasts.
The morning’s session of key speakers gave
informative presentations on matters of interest not
only to ESS Breeders, but also to Dog Breeders in
general.
Dr. Roseanne Taylor, Sydney University, spoke on
Storage diseases and the part that ESS have played in
the quest for a cure for this disease that also
affects children.
Dr. Robert Zammit spoke on Canine reproduction and
the advances made in successful implantation of frozen
semen.
George Sofronidis geneticist gave a fascinating
talk on DNA technology, research and testing and how
it can play a huge role in detecting hereditary
disease.
Steve Austin dog trainer extraordinaire gave a most
interesting talk on the working Springer and it’s role
in present day drug and bomb detection.
Steve and the audience then adjourned to one of the
spacious lawns to demonstrate the ESS at work in the
field with the help of some very talented ESS.
After lunch the ESS Breed Standard was discussed in
depth by a panel of experienced Breeder/Judges with
Michael Keely acting as Moderator.
Marie Merchant (Clanach) Kate Keely (Alhambra)
Stephanie Rickard (Wongan) and Spaniel man and All
Breeds Judge Geoff Love (Lovelang Cockers) dissected
the Standard with the help of a PowerPoint
presentation on the standard, illustrating each facet
of the standard prepared by Marie Merchant.
Much discussion was generated by this and also by
the workshop questions answered by the audience.
As is the custom IESSC presented Award of Merit
plates to the following members of the ESS fraternity
for their service to the Breed and its advancement in
Australia. Brian Prudames, 1st. President of the ESSA
of NSW,
May and John Peters of Drumhill Kennels and Rachel
Greaves of the famous Wrangham field trial ESS.
The committee of IESSC Australia also of it’s own
volition presented an Award of Merit plate to David
Swank for his tireless efforts as President of IESSC
and thank you plates to the Secretary and Treasurer
Shannon Lancaster and George Render (Reibey) for all
their hard work to make the event a success.
With the Sporting Spaniel Club of NSW holding a
Championship Show the previous day to the Symposium
and the ESSA of NSW holding their CH. Show the day
after, where David Swank presented a cup for BIS on
behalf of IESSC, it was a great social weekend for the
ESS fraternity and all who attended thoroughly enjoyed
it.
The most frequent question asked was "when can we
do it again?"
