Comments about the symposium
CAROL CALLAHAN (Donahan) USA

I feel my contribution to this successful seminar was very small as the portion in which I participated was short in duration. Overall I thought there was lots of valuable information available from many knowledgeable sources and those in attendance seemed to take advantage of it.

Thank you for your effort on behalf of this seminar and I am sure the resulting income will be used for good research purposes.

THOMAS EDWARD NESBITT

The 5th International English Springer Spaniel Symposium was held in Calgary Alberta, August 3rd/4th 2007. It was a privilege to have participated in this Symposium as its moderator with such distinguished panelists as Wendy Bessemer (Bessemer Kennels, Canada), Carol Callahan (Donahan Kennels, USA), Dr. Bruce Grahn DVM from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, the University of Saskatchewan, Marie Merchant (Clanach Kennels, Australia), Henriette Schmidt (Hillcrest Kennels, USA), Wayne Brennen (Brickburn Kennels, Canada), Liz Hansen, Coordinator of the DNA Bank and Seizure Study at the University of Missouri and Annika Ultveit-Moe (Whisborne Kennels, Sweden).

Imagine being with all of these wonderful people plus David Swank, President of the IESSC. Our thanks to the organizing committee for putting together a wonderfully jam-packed-with-information-programme that a lot of participants enjoyed.

In my opinion, these events do more than promote our breed. They open doors to positive discussion and exchange. They afford the opportunity to breeders and professionals involved with our breed to meet and get better acquainted. This is very important. When one has to contact someone who is no longer a stranger then more constructive exchange takes place with greater ease. Surely all to the benefit of our dogs.

I cannot begin to provide all of the details of each session- There was so much material presented that it was difficult to cover everything in the allotted time. But that just leaves us with a thirst for the next Symposium.

On thing that really struck me throughout the event was the passion that everyone had for the English Springer and while we may not all agree on all of the fine points of conformation, there was entire agreement in the English Springer being of sound body and mind. I was pleased to be part of healthy and open discussions concerning temperament. The PRA issue is being handled extremely well and we are fortunate to have the folks at the University of Missouri carrying out the intricate studies with this regard.

Time and expense are certainly factors that limit participation is these events but I would highly recommend saving your loose change so that you could attend and participate in a future event. Even though I have been in the breed for a number of years I came away with a better appreciation of the English Springer Spaniel. It will help me be a better breeder and judge.

Thanks to all who took part.

5th International English Springer Spaniel Symposium
August 3rd - 4th August 2007, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

SANNA KAVÉN (Wildomar's), Finland

The 5th IESSC symposium was held 3rd and 4th August in Calgary Alberta Canada and it was organized by Lynn Dorsay (Bondir, Canada) who did a fantastic job together with the Canadian committee members Cathy Barlow (Tasmara/Barcath, Canada), Wendy Bessemer (Beswin, Canada), Mary Ann & Gloria Dalton, Anne & Barb Dorsay (Bondir, Canada), Stu Gilmour and Geoff Kittridge (Ridgecroft, Canada).

I find the idea and concept of the international symposium excellent. This kind of event gives such a nice chance to meet other breeders worldwide and have open discussions about the breed. This symposium was the second symposium I attended as the first was in Tammsvik Sweden 2004, and most likely I will come to Sweden again next year. This whole event including the symposium and shows in Calgary were such an unforgettable experience for me. It was a pleasure to meet all the breeders and other breed enthusiasts as well as their dogs during my visit in beautiful Alberta. Thanks to all the people I met for their kindness, it was nice to share some thoughts. And my special thanks goes to the President of IESSC (the man behind the whole concept), David Swank (Mariposa, USA) and his partner Scott Lenz for all they did to make my visit just perfect. I truly enjoyed every second!

There was a lot to see also at shows with nice entry of springers. Show ground was very good and we could enjoy a beautiful weather. Dogs were shown in lovely condition and the atmosphere around the ring was very nice. I want to congratulate all the winner dogs as well as their breeders and owners.

The start of all events was the Westwinds Sporting Dog Club Speciality show in the morning on Friday 3rd August. Judge was Dorothy MacDonald (USA). Main results:

BOB - Ch.Beswin Ynot Achey Breaky Heart
BOS - Ch.Synergenic’s Tiger Lily
WD & BOW - Synergenic Silver Chief
WB - Otein’s Vintners Cuvee
BPIB - Mariposa Aldabaran

On the same day there was also the Wild Rose English Springer Spaniel Speciality show. Puppy & Veteran Sweepstakes was judged by David Swartwood (Bryden/ Prelude, Canada). Main results:

BOB/BIS Juvenile - Mariposa Aldabaran
BOS Juvenile - Barcath Bee Naughty N Nice
BOB/BIS Veteran - Ch.Cascadian Caliner De Bondir

The speciality show was judged by Carol Callahan (Donahan, USA). Main results:

BOB/BIS - Ch.Beswin Ynot Achey Breaky Heart
BOS - Ch.Cascadian Caliner De Bondir
WD & BOW - Synergenic Silver Chief
WB - Bondir’s Flying Duchess
BPIB/BPIS - Barcath Bee Naughty N Nice
Award of Merit - Ch.Salutaire Beswin Gifted

In the evening on Friday was finally time for the IESSC symposium on the show place. First we could enjoy some snack and soft drinks after which started the symposium. Thomas Nesbitt (Bryden/ Prelude, Canada) did a great job as a moderator. On this first evening we had a chance to enjoy some very interesting lectures. First Prof.Dr. Bruce H. Grahn DVM ACVO ABVP from Canada told about the current eye disease concerns in our breed. After that Liz Hansen, the coordinator for the DNA bank and seizure study at the University of Missouri, told us more about genetics and PRA cord1 mutation testing. She did a good job telling us about complicated subject so that it was quite easy to understand. And the day was ended with Wayne Brennan’s (Brickburn, Canada) words about hunting with springer spaniels. The evening was full of interesting topics and discussions.

On Saturday morning 4th August was time for the Alberta Kennel Club all breed show where springers were judged by Marie Merchant (Clanach, Australia). Main results:

BOB & IESSC CUP Winner - Ch.Bondir’s Gamine Georgine
BOS & WD & BOW (CAN CH) - Ch.Wildomar’s Catch InThe Rye
WB - Otein’s Vintners Cuvee
BPIB - Mariposa Aldabaran

In the evening on Saturday it was time for the 2nd day of the IESSC symposium. The evening started with a delicious buffet with wine and soft drinks. After the dinner we had heard views about the health issues around the world by Carol Callahan (USA), Annika Ulltveit-Moe (Sweden) and Marie Merchant (Australia). The health issues and concerns were found to be quite the same around the world.

After that it was time to discuss about the differences in breed standards around the world. Marie Merchant (Clanach, Australia) introduced us the FCI breed standard with very well demonstrating slide show with many good photos from quality dogs around the world. We participants were lucky to get this slide show home on CD and I think I will watch it still many times. Henriette Schmidt (Hillcrest, USA) told us more about American Kennel Club breed standard and the participants got the ESSFTA booklet called "An Illustrated Discussion of the Standard for the English Springer Spaniel", which is also used for judge candidates to teach them the breed standard. I found the pictures in this booklet very illustrative and it was nice compact declaration about our breed to make it easier to understand the breed standard. At the end of the day Wendy Bessemer (Beswin, Canada) told us quickly about the differences of the CKC, AKC and FCI breed standards.

There was still planned to have discussions about temperaments and the future of the breed, but unfortunately there was not time for these issues. But I am sure these issues will come up in future events arranged by IESSC.

On Sunday 5th August was time for another all breed show of Alberta Kennel Club judged by Annika Ulltveit-Moe (Whisborne, Sweden). Main results:

BOB & IESSC CUP Winner - Ch.Beswin’s Commemoration
BOS & WB & BOW - Otein’s Vintners Cuvee
WD & BPIB - Mariposa Aldabaran

On Monday 6th August there was still one more all breed show of Alberta Kennel Club, where springers were judged by Richard Beauchamp (United States). Main results:

BOB - Ch. Synergenic's Winners Circle
BOS - Ch.Salutaire Beswin Gifted
WB & BOW - Otein’s Vintners Cuvee
WD - Berkenbar Bysanze
BPIB - Mariposa Aldabaran

If I should say shortly about this experience: it was unforgettable and interesting trip to Canada with informative lectures and discussions, lots of new things and experiences and such a fun time together with friends. IESSC is doing a great job for us who care about the breed and its future.
Thank you. - Sanna Kavén, Wildomar's ESS, Finland -
