With great pleasure, I participated in my third
International English Springer Spaniel Symposium, this
year in Monroe, Michigan. I had wondered if the momentum
begun with the first Symposium, held in 2003 in Toledo,
OH could be maintained on its second venture in the US.
I think we can all say it did that and more. There was a
strong representation of the breed at the show (58
entries) with a good representation of types seen around
the world (though many of the local players chose not to
come). Judges Ray Smith (UK) and Kate Keely (Aust) each
had an opportunity to express their opinions and I don’t
think many were disappointed with their choices.
The evening between shows brought us to a well
attended Symposium. Despite the fact that we had all
been busy with dogs during the day, the attendance was
great. After a catered dinner including private label
wines, cocktails, ice sculpture and an ever-flowing
chocolate fountain, the seminar proper began. David
Swank (Mariposa Springers) Master of Ceremony got things
rolling. I was truly honored to receive recognition from
the IESSC with an Award of Merit, along with moderator
Kathy Lorentzen, for my chronic addiction to English
Springer Spaniels.
On panel this year were Julie Roberts of Eldamar
Springers (USA), Kate Keely of Alhambra Springs (Aust),
Ray Smith of Melverly Springers (UK) and myself, of
Mystic Springs (USA). Moderator Kathy Lorentzen of Ocoee
Springers provided a power point presentation base from
which to work and stimulate conversation between
panelists and the audience. Much discussion followed
each topic which began with my own presentation on
health issues with a focus on ocular diseases (obviously
the area I specialize in). I found a great interest in
the meaning of “type” as well as picking into smaller
details such as size, head type and particularly
movement. Last in discussion was temperament with some
dissention among the attendees as to what constituted
correct temperament and where to find it. (In my own
opinion, the work ethic springers were bred for is a
good starting point for evaluating what is right and
what is wrong. It is what you select and are willing to
accept living with, that defines the temperaments we
currently have. Bad temperaments can come from any line
of dogs if you chose poorly.)
The chance to see old faces and meet new friends made
this, yet again, a fabulous weekend. I find the
opportunity to discus the breed on an International
forum the best thing that could happen to this breed.
There has been so much dissention over the years as to
whose springer is or is not correct. After each event I
find we have more similarities than differences. I look
forward to attending the next symposium in England,
2006.

It was a pleasure and indeed a great honour to
be invited to judge English Springer Spaniels for the
Monroe Kennel Association USA on October 2nd 2005. After
spending a couple of relaxing days it was on to the job
in hand of judging a nice entry of 58 exhibits...
Mostly, just as in other countries there was a mixture
of types. Along with the full American bred Springers,
there was British and Scandinavian breeding, plus
Americans crossed with both.
Special mentions to my BOW Dog, a very high quality
Swedish import called ‘Whisborne Esquire’. A typical dog
from this famous kennel. I was impressed with his great
ground covering gait, a feature typical of some of the
better Scandinavian bloodlines... Overall BOW was the
classy bitch ‘TKB Orions Desire At Fidlerglen’ she’s a
lovely type and looked an absolute picture when stacked.
There were 20 exhibits in the superb Champion class,
again there was quite a variety in type, which after a
lot of head scratching I whittled down to my final four
very high quality exhibits... A very handsome British
dog, ‘ Ch Eastriding Exclusive’, two completely American
bred dogs, ‘Ch Esspecial Twice in a Blu Moon’ and ‘Ch’
Serenades Séance’. And also my eventual BOS winner ‘Ch
Hillcrest Kocrk Pinebend Bet’, a delightful bitch with
mostly American bloodlines and quite a lot of ‘Calvdale
(UK) influence back a few generations... However, after
a very close run thing, my final decision went to ‘ Ch
Esspecial Twice In A Blu Moon’ for Best of Breed. He is
a very glamorous specimen of correct size with a
pleasing enough head. Super legs and feet... Good front...
Nice body proportions. Good angles in shoulders and rear...
I loved his sound parallel movement fore and aft, in
fact he moved as well as any Springer I have judged this
year...
My trip to the States also involved sitting on the
panel the International English Springer Spaniel
Symposium which took place later in the evening... Now I
must admit when I was first asked to be part of this
fairly new concept. I was quite sceptical and negative
towards the motives or indeed the actual advantages and
usefulness of an International Symposium. But I can
honestly say after my experience sitting on the panel
and listening to learned panel members and
breeder-exhibiters alike, I am convinced that it can
only be a good thing to bring together experts in there
respective fields to share ideas with fellow English
Springer fanciers from all over the world...
After a few amusing opening words from the IESSC
President David Swank and then the introduction of the
four panel members, plus our moderator, Kathy Lorentzen,
the seminar got under way...
Kathy made a great job of keeping things flowing and
interesting, while at the same time maintaining a
friendly informal atmosphere as we covered quite a few
points’ starting with health issues and temperament.
We were very fortunate to have Dr Cynthia Wheeler as a
panel Member to give us a brilliant talk on the health
and hereditary issues affecting our breed today. Myself
and my other two fellow panel members, Kate Keely of the
big winning ‘Alhambra’ kennels in Australia, and Julie
Roberts of the very successful ‘Eldamar’ kennels in the
US then added comments and opinions of our own
respective countries standing on such matters, which
prompted lively debate, especially on temperament, from
the knowledgeable audience.
It was then on to quite an in-depth discussion on the
differences between Springer’s in the States and the
rest of the world. Again the audience eagerly
participated and with the aid of a very well put
together power point of photographs and diagrams, the
debates was broadened into talk of confirmation,
movement and overall breed type.
An audience workshop brought to an end of what had been
a very well organised event and a most successful and
enjoyable evening, I for one look forward to the 4th
IESSC which is to be held in the UK in 2006.

I was delighted to take part in the 2005 IESSC
symposium held in Monroe, Michigan.
The concept of an annual seminar to review and discuss the
breed as a whole on a worldwide scale is a terrific one
and has been much needed for years.
I think the concept of "one World" is a
fantastic one and it is so heartening that finally we as
breeders may have to opportunity to get together and pool
ideas and thoughts and share our experiences of the breed.
That we can do it on a Global basis is even better.
The whole event took place over the weekend of the 1st
& 2nd October at the Monroe Kennel Club. It kicked off
on Saturday with a large breed entry (58) being judged by
panellist Ray Smith of the World Famous "Melverly"
Springers from the UK. BOB was Ch Esspecial Twice in a Blu
Moon with BOS going to Ch Hillcrest Kocrk Pinebend Bet.
BOW was the recent Swedish import Whisborne Esquire and
Winners bitch was TKB Orions Desire at Fidlerglen.
David Swank - the Master of Ceremonies (whose brainchild
this whole concept is) opened the Symposium in the early
evening. To get us all fired up, there was a fabulous
buffet complete with an IESSC ice sculpture and a
chocolate fountain, which generated a lot of attention all
evening.
To complete the culinary delights were specially
labelled bottles of wine with the IESSC logo on them.
The proceedings started off with the introduction of
the panellists, (Ray Smith (UK), Julie Roberts (USA), Dr
Cynthia Wheeler (USA) and myself) who then spoke about
their involvement in the breed before moving on to the
main event. Slickly moderated by Kathy Lorentzen, who kept
us all under control, this involved plenty of spirited
discourse about the state of the breed in the various
countries represented,
One of the major discussions was the health of the
breed. It was very interesting to see the different
problems that exist in different countries and how they
are dealt with. It would seem that Australia is a little
behind the times in this respect although many breeders
test their breeding stock no results are published
whereas in Scandinavia, America and the UK the results
are public. Cindy Wheeler took us through many aspects
of the breeds problems, which was incredibly informative
and worth a Symposium on its own. PRA and fucocidosis
were two of the more popular subjects discussed here.
Kathy Lorentzen did a power point presentation on the
breed standards including the differences between the
American and UK (FCI) standard. Beautifully illustrated
with many international Springer photographs, this
provided the panel and audience with plenty of material
to discuss and debate. Three of the most popular points
of the standard that came in for plenty of discussion
was heads, the correct movement and Springer temperament.
There is no doubt that everyone feels strongly about the
latter.
The symposium ended with an audience workshop and the
presentations of the IESSC awards, which on this
occasion were awarded to Cindy Wheeler and Kathy
Lorentzen for their services to the English Springer
Spaniel.
To finish the weekend off, there was once again a
large entry of Springers on the Sunday at the Monroe KC
for myself to judge. BOB here was Ch Hillcrest Kocrk
Pinebend Bet who had been Best Opposite Sex the previous
day. Best Opposite Sex and Winners dog was Whisborne
Esquire (Imp Sweden). Best Of Winners was the Junior
Bitch Whisborne Obsession (Imp Sweden). I found the
quality overall to be good and found that in the bigger
bitch classes I was having to leave some nice exhibits
unplaced. The BOB class was certainly a challenge to
judge with several different styles of Springer
competing. Most of these were very high quality with
very little between them. I found the BOB to be a very
typical moderate bitch well made and a good mover. Later
on she took Group 4 in a very competitive Sporting group.

Group Tour from Scandinavia will be arranged from
Stockholm / Kopenhagen to the 3rd International English
Springer Spaniel Symposium in USA.
