Frances started in Springers in the late sixties and I, in the early seventies. Frances was working for the world famous Hawkhill kennel owned by Judith Hancock. From whom her foundation bitch Hawkhill Derby Daydream.

About this time the late, and great, Ernest Froggatt and his wife June (Moorcliff) who are big friends of Judith introduced me to the English springer spaniel. Frances and I remain indebted to the Moorcliff Kennel and Hawkhill kennels for their help, support and guidance over the years.

We began exhibiting Springer’s over thirty odd years ago and my first two champions were indeed from the Moorcliff Kennels - a dog Moorcliff Regent and a bitch - Moorcliff Sunnymaid. And Frances foundation bitch Hawkhill Derby Daydream quickly gained her title.

It seemed a natural progression from showing to judging and, whilst it seems like only yesterday, we now realise that we have been awarding Challenges in the breed for over twenty years! As does sometimes happen, our interests in other breeds grew and we have shown. Cockers English Bull Terrier Sussex (who won BoB at Crufts) making up English Cocker Sh Ch Mossdew Imagination. And bred Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds.

We have been fortunate enough to be invited to judge at some prestigious Specialty events in Scandinavia, Europe and Australia. In Scandinavia, we have judged all the Spaniel breeds at championship level and indeed, judged Cockers at the Finnish International Kennel Club Show. Additionally, We have judged all the Gundog breeds at Open Show level at home in the UK. Frances and I have both judged at Crufts.

I’m licensed to judge English Springer’s and English Cockers in the UK and Frances English Springer’s Frances has passed the criteria to judge English Cockers and has been invited to judge the breed in 2008.

My wife Frances and I, have bred many champions (over 50) at home and abroad and currently have 6 champions living with us at Mompesson. Together we strive to develop those special qualities in the English springer spaniel that we both love.
